Should my child use an electric or manual toothbrush?

What parents need to know?

One of the most common questions we hear at NexGen Dentistry is that one. The short answer is both can work, but powered toothbrushes remove more plaque on average, around 11% at one to three months and about 21% after that. The biggest challenge isn’t the brush, it’s kids’ habits. Many brush for too short of a time or miss areas. Electric brushes can help because many have a two minute timer and pressure sensors, which makes good habits easier.

When to start?

There’s no single right age. Many kids can use a child-sized electric brush around age 3 with supervision. It may be especially helpful if your child brushes quickly, has had cavities, or has braces. That said, a soft manual toothbrush is still a solid choice when used carefully for two full minutes.

The bottom line: Both are fine. If your child needs extra help or motivation, electric may make it easier.
