Post-Operative Instructions After Tooth Extraction

Following these instructions after a tooth extraction or oral surgery helps prevent complications such as dry socket and infection and supports proper healing.

Day 1 (First 24 Hours)
• Bite firmly on gauze for 30–45 minutes to control bleeding.
• Do NOT spit, rinse, smoke, vape, or use a straw for 24 hours (no straw for 3 days).
• Avoid alcohol and carbonated drinks.
• The goal is to protect the blood clot in the extraction site.

🚫 Smoking & Vaping
• Absolutely NO smoking or vaping for at least 10 days.
• Smoking greatly increases the risk of dry socket, infection, delayed healing, and severe pain.

Pain & Medications
• Your antibiotic and pain medication have been sent to your pharmacy.
• Start pain medication before numbness wears off and continue for at least 3 days.
• Finish the entire antibiotic and take it exactly as prescribed by the hour (every 6 or 8 hours—not “three times a day”).

Swelling
• Apply ice packs to the outside of the face 15–20 minutes on, 15–20 minutes off during the first 24 hours.
• Swelling should begin to improve within 72 hours.

Bleeding
• Mild oozing is normal for the first 12–24 hours.
• If bleeding continues, apply firm pressure with gauze or a damp tea bag for 30–60 minutes.
• Call our office if bleeding does not stop.

Oral Hygiene
• Brush gently, avoiding the surgical area.
• You may rinse gently with lukewarm saltwater, but do not spit—let liquid passively fall from your mouth.

Diet
• Drink plenty of fluids.
• Eat soft foods such as yogurt, soups, pasta, fish, or smoothies (no straw).
• Avoid spicy, hot, or crunchy foods.

Stitches
• If sutures were placed, do not touch or pull on them.
• A short visit may be needed in 7–10 days for removal if they are not dissolvable.
