Does whitening tooth paste work?

Teeth normally accumulate stains from dark food and drinks and daily habits such as smoking. Whitening toothpaste can only remove stains that are on the top layer of the tooth. If the stain penetrates to the remaining layers of the tooth, whitening toothpaste will not work on removing the dark color. Whitening toothpaste works by either removing the stains mechanically with an abrasive ingredient in the toothpaste or chemically with an ingredient called peroxide in the toothpaste.

Before using any whitening toothpaste, ask your dentist if it is a trusted brand. Abrasive ingredients can erode the enamel exposing the dentin and turn your teeth more yellow. Chemical ingredients can burn a patient's gums if the chemical is too strong. To remain cautious, check with you dentist before use.
